Even on it's own an elliptical machine provides a combination of different movements from running to skiing to cycling. You'll often find that when you perform the same exercises over time, your body adapts and you hit a plateau. Throw in an elliptical machine to mix it up a bit. Let's say you are an avid runner. You might even have a treadmill for those days when the weather won't cooperate. If you were to step on to an elliptical machine on some of those days, you would more than likely find it actually boosts your running ability. This happens because our bodies are so good at adapting to what is normal. Putting an elliptical machine into your running routine is similar to the concept of changing your weight training routine every six weeks or so - if you don't do it, your body gets accustomed to where it is at physically and you plateau. Whatever your sport, an elliptical machine is a great way to put some variety into your current workout.
