July 24, 2004 By: Kevin Brown Elliptical cross trainers hit the market in 1995It's almost been 10 years since the first elliptical cross trainer was introduced by Precor Fitness Equipment and their popularity has increased immensely over the years. Back in 1997 there were 2.4 million elliptical cross trainers being used. By the year 2000 that number jumped to 6.2 million. The rise in popularity of the elliptical cross trainers is due mainly to the fact that they deliver a weight-bearing cardio workout with almost no impact. When compared to other solutions, this is the only piece of equipment that can make this claim. Even a step machine results in more impact because of it's abrupt change in direction from up to down. Elliptical cross trainers are probably the first piece of cardio equipment in years to hit the market that has stayed. Many times new innovations end up just being fads with little or no added value to the industry. The elliptical machine is not one of those. It is an innovation in technology that enables even those that are overweight to participate in a high intensity cardio workout with minimal risk of injury.
